Admittedly, this painting took me three times going back to the location to complete. But, there is something about painting the landscape outside, while being totally immersed in the scene that captures an energy on canvas that cannot be captured in the studio setting.

It’s thrilling! You can see colors and depth in the open air that you cannot see from a photograph taken of the same scene. It’s true. I didn’t believe it until I did this painting. Do you see the green mountains in the background? They photograph blue! Had I painted this scene in the studio, that mountain range would be painted blue. The painting would have taken on a whole different energy and aesthetic.
